It is BCorp month in March. I am not a huge fan of ‘months’, particularly dry January (but that’s a different matter). When The Nursery board made the decision to pursue BCorp Certification, we saw it as an ongoing commitment, not something we turn on and off when there’s a push in social media.
So, we don’t have any out-of-the-ordinary celebrations planned for March, no special fundraising, ‘cycle to work’ days, or ‘recycle at work’ days. We push ourselves to be better corporate citizens every day, every month, in terms of how we treat our employees (partners), our broader community, our clients and the planet.
We’ve just re-submitted our application for BCorp Certification which has been a valuable process – The BCorp assessment tool is designed to help companies measure, manage, and improve their social and environmental impact and we have found it to be incredibly useful to track our improvement over time.
It is not a simple process though – there are up to 200 questions covering everything from carbon emissions to charitable donations, from the distribution of bonuses to the nature and mix of clients. But our initial certification in 2022 drew a line in the sand and gave us the impetus to improve. Our BCorp working group systematically works in a ‘Brailsfordian’ manner, searching out the incremental changes that make a difference.
We won’t see the results of these improvements until our certification process is completed towards the end of the year. But irrespective of the score I can look around the business with an element of pride at the way we conduct ourselves – every month of the year.
